2006 Letter to ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson from Senators Snowe and Rockefeller

This 2006 letter from U.S. Senators Snowe and Rockefeller to Exxon Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson criticizes Exxon for its climate denial efforts and “longstanding support of a small cadre of global climate change skeptics.” The Senators argue that Exxon’s climate denial strategy has made it difficult for the US to “demonstrate moral clarity,” and has “damaged the stature of our nation internationally.” The letter reveals that studies show that Exxon is the primary funding source for no less than 29 major climate denial organizations, including the Competitive Enterprise Institute and has contributed over $19 million to climate skepticism. The Senators encourage Tillerson to end Exxon’s support of climate “deniers” and urge Exxon to invest their resources in promoting technological innovations to address climate change. The Senators conclude by requesting that Tillerson and Exxon “come clean” about the industry’s past denial activities. The letter also mentions the media’s role in furthering Exxon’s climate denial efforts.
