1980 Imperial Oil Newsletter: Environmental Health and Conservation News

This 1980 document from Imperial Oil Ltd, the Canadian subsidiary of Exxon, is a newsletter produced by Exxon Research and Engineering titled “Environmental Health and Conservation News.” This document is part of the ClimateFiles Imperial Oil document set, gleaned by DeSmog researchers from the Glenbow Imperial Oil Archive Collection.

The newsletter addresses concerns such as the health impacts of toxic substances resulting from Exxon’s operations, including incidences of “birth defects among industry worker offspring.” The document briefly mentions “Co2 Greenhouse Effect,” stating that “Exxon-supported work is already underway to help define the seriousness of this problem. Such information is needed to assess the implications for future fossil fuel use. Government funding will be sought to expand the use of Exxon tankers in determining the capacity of the ocean to store Co2.”
