1974 Imperial Oil Review of Environmental Protection Activities

This 1974 document from Imperial Oil Ltd, the Canadian subsidiary of Exxon, is a “Review of Environmental Protection Activities” undertaken by Imperial Oil Limited. This document is part of the ClimateFiles Imperial Oil document set, gleaned by DeSmog researchers from the Glenbow Imperial Oil Archive Collection.

The report demonstrates Imperial’s internal concern with the growing public attention paid to environmental issues such as air and water pollution, and makes note of many polls regarding the increasing prioritization of environmental considerations by both Canadians and Americans.

Referring to the potential implementation of regulatory policies by the Canadian government, the report states: “In keeping with our environmental policy, a great deal of effort will continue to be required in working with governments to ensure regulations are needed and achievable… our industry has gained [government] respect by its positive and constructive attitude and accomplishments. It is crucial, therefore, that we continue to contribute our share to these activities.”
