1992 GCC UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Statement

This 1992 document is a statement released by the Global Climate Coalition (GCC) regarding the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The industry-funded GCC opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.

In September 1992 the GCC Chairman, Michael Baroody endorsed ratification of the UNFCCC despite being “deeply concerned about how the Convention will be interpreted and implemented.” Baroody’s testimony warned that measures to sharply reduce greenhouse gas emissions would put a strain on the US economy, reminding the Senate that “new scientific evidence gives additional weight to the theory that adverse climate change is not occuring.”

This document is part of the private collection of Nicky Sundt, a Washington-based climate change science, policy and communications expert.
