1999 GCC “Insurance study on global warming impact” Backgrounder

In this 1999 memo the Global Climate Coalition (GCC) tried to alert the media to a recent study doubting the detrimental effects of climate change. In the attached article, Global Warming Poses Insurers Little Risk, a representative from the American Insurance Association is quoted as saying, “climate change does not pose a threat to the US property-casualty insurance industry.”

The industry-funded GCC opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.
