2000 GCC “Oil Prices an Omen for Life under Kyoto Protocol”

This Global Climate Coalition (GCC) News Release attacked the Kyoto protocol and promoted “voluntary programs” to address emission reductions instead. Quoted in the release, Executive Director of the GCC, Glenn Kelly stated:

“The current fuel price increases are a harbinger of things to come if a United Nations climate treaty is allowed to enter into force…If the U.S. Senate were to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the sticker shock for gasoline and other oil products that American families are struggling with today will seem like small change by comparison.”

The industry-funded GCC opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.

This document is part of the private collection of Nicky Sundt, a Washington-based climate change science, policy and communications expert.
