1993 GCC Response to Clinton Earth Day Pledge News Release and Attachments

This Global Climate Coalition (GCC) letter to reporters attacked, at the time, recent national discussions concerning the regulation of greenhouse gases. The industry-funded GCC opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.

GCC uses this letter to try and convince reporters that, “Efforts to stabilize greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are prime candidates for a worrisome and potentially regrettable environmental policy.” GCC goes on to say, “The science is uncertain, and the targets and timetables are arbitrary, not a scientific benchmark.”

Included in the mailing was a copy of a GCC News Release titled, “Industry Group Encouraged by President Clinton’s Call for Further Economic Analysis on Reducing Greenhouse Gases,” and two New York Times articles titled, “New View Calls Environmental Policy Misguided,” and “Second Chance on Environment.”

This document is part of the private collection of Nicky Sundt, a Washington-based climate change science, policy and communications expert.
